Lighting a candle is often a small, everyday gesture. To relax, create an atmosphere, feel good at home. But behind this simple moment lies a question we rarely ask ourselves: what are we really burning in our living space?
It was precisely this question that led me to become interested in natural candles and to make different choices from those found in industrial production.
🕯️ Not all candles are created equal
The majority of mass-produced candles are made from paraffin wax , a petroleum derivative. It is inexpensive and easy to work with, but it is also non-renewable and can produce more soot when burned.
The combustion of paraffin can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) , such as benzene or toluene, especially in enclosed and poorly ventilated spaces, a well-known reality during our Canadian winters.
🌿 Why soy wax is a better option
For our part, we chose a 100% natural soy wax .
It is a plant-based wax, biodegradable, renewable, which burns more slowly and evenly than paraffin.
In practical terms, this means:
-
cleaner combustion
-
less black smoke
-
a candle that lasts longer
And above all, an atmosphere that remains gentle and pleasant over time.
🌸 An important word about fragrances
Our candles are scented with a blend of essential oils and synthetic fragrances , they are phthalate-free and paraben-free , and chosen according to strict safety standards.
Why does this detail matter?
Because some phthalates — sometimes used in industrial perfumes — are recognized as potential endocrine disruptors , meaning they can interfere with the hormonal system when there is repeated or prolonged exposure.
Some studies have explored possible links between exposure to these substances and:
-
hormonal imbalances
-
impacts on fertility
-
more pronounced effects in women
⚠️ Important to note:
This doesn't mean that all commercially produced candles are dangerous, nor that every exposure is problematic. But it does explain why more and more people are choosing to reduce their exposure to certain ingredients , especially in a domestic and repetitive setting.
🌬️ A gentler burn for your space
With natural soy wax and a natural cotton wick , the combustion is more stable and cleaner.
Result :
-
less residue in the air
-
a lighter atmosphere
-
a more comfortable space, even for sensitive people
It's often a detail that you notice afterwards... when you go back to an industrial candle.
🌎 A more conscious choice
Choosing a natural candle is not about seeking perfection.
It's simply about making a more thoughtful choice:
-
renewable raw materials
-
fewer unnecessary chemicals
-
locally handcrafted
A small gesture, but one that is part of a gentler and more conscious approach to everyday life.
✨ In summary
Natural candles offer:
-
cleaner combustion
-
fewer substances of concern
-
a better lifespan
-
a reduced environmental impact
-
a more balanced sensory experience
They are designed to create an atmosphere… without compromise.
Hopefully these reflections have helped you better understand the importance of what you choose to light up in your home, and inspire you to create a pleasant atmosphere.
